Senegal-raised Akon is currently one of the hottest hip hop and R&B singers known for his unique mix of West African and East Coast songwriting style.

Son of a jazz percussionist, Akon's break came when one of his home-made tapes found its way to Universal/SRC. Music producers of the record label signed Akon immediately and he released his debut album Trouble in 2004. The album, which featured the US top 10 single 'Locked Up', was a certified hit selling 3 million copies to date, launching Akon into overnight stardom status.

In 2006, Akon released his second album entitled convicted, which was also well-received. The album, which sold 2.2 million copies, features hit singles Smack That and I Wanna Love You. Akon has also been nominated for several awards including Best Hip Hop Act (MTV Europe Music Awards), Hottest Hook (Vibe Awards) and Best Rap/Sung Collaboration (Grammy Awards).
